But it takes no corrective action when water is dumped on it. Living systems, in contrast, can correct for at least some disturbances. ” Maintenance of a desired state in the face of disturbances has been given a term that is central to physiology: homeostasis (homeo, “similar”; stasis, “to stand or stay,” although used here to mean “state”). The concept began with the French scientist Claude Bernard (1813–1878). ” He documented the abilities of mammals to maintain a relatively constant state of the internal environment (which he called le milieu interieur).

It is important to recognize that cells perform these specialized activities in addition to carrying on the unceasing, fundamental activities required of all cells. The fundamental cell activities are essential for the survival of each individual cell, whereas the specialized contributions and interactions among the cells of a multicellular organism contribute to the survival of the whole organism. Cells are progressively organized into tissues, organs, systems, and finally the whole body Just as a machine does not function unless all its various parts are properly assembled, the cells of organisms must be specifically organized to carry out the life-sustaining processes of the whole, such as (in animals) digestion, respiration, and circulation.

It consists of the extracellular (extra means “outside of”) fluid, or ECF, which in vertebrates is made up of plasma, the fluid portion of the blood, and interstitial fluid, which surrounds and bathes the cells (Figure 1-5). Various epithelial layers accomplish exchanges between the external environment and the internal environment. For example, a digestive system transfers the nutrients required by all body cells from the external environment into the ECF (such as blood, which is part of the internal body environment).
