In a sense this is what is meant by saying it's not enough for adversity to become an aid to your spiri tual practice. In the worst sense, you can use adversity as an excuse for entering the path. The main point to bring out is that it is vital that you cultivate this strong and continuous sense of gratitude. It is through grati tude that even severe suffering will be extremely agreeable. This is how it is that practitioners achieve enlightenment in one body and in one lifetime. There's no other way, because they have the ultimate goal in mind.
Patience cannot be developed if there is no object through which patience can be cultivated. It is the same for morality, diligence, generosity and concentration. Wisdom is the awareness of the actual nature of subject, object, and activity as well as the skillful application of the method coupled with discriminat ing awareness.
